Upon my departure from college and as I approach entering the real world...a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. Although I will be living farther away...you will all be closer to my heart.

Just Killing Time

It's just after 2pm on Wednesday afternoon.
By-the-way, Happy Halloween!
I just had a delicious lunch in the cafeteria (they had Pumpkin Spice Soup).
Earlier, I went to my automotive shop and got new tires and wipers installed on my car (that was a fun bill to pay:).
I should be on my bike right now...and I will be in a few minutes...no rush to do it during the day-light-hours because it is CRAP outside today! After cycling yesterday in shorts and shirts with a layer of sunscreen because it was so clear and warm...the weather is disgusting today! I woke up to a heavy, thick layer of low, grey clouds and a completely different temperature range than yesterday. So the only answer is to go put a DVD in the basement and hop on the Computrainer for a few hours (okay, a few half-hours).
I'm enjoying the little taper that we are on for the race this weekend...it would probably effect me a bit more if I was planning on FINISHING the race...but I can still enjoy the extra free time and the increased energy.
Swim practice was a fun event this morning. We pulled mini-sets out of a plastic pumpkin, ranging from 200 - 800 meters, drills, fast sets, fun stuff...it was all in the spirit of Halloween. Cliff even passed out candy treats at the end of practice...vanilla tootsie-rolls are my favorite item!
I just got an email from the Media-Director at USA Triathlon asking for my permission for NBCOlympics.com to use material from my blog for their Triathlon page. Gee, I wonder what my answer was? YES, of course! I checked out the website and was thrilled to see the OLYMPIC page covered with IRONMAN articles and news items...yeah, no wonder us ITU athletes have a hard time explaining what we do!!

Bye-Bye Mike...We Already Miss You

Sad news, we are losing a great member of the OTC Resident Team...Mike Orton is flying home to the East Coast tomorrow morning! He's been a fun member to the training group here in COS and his relaxed and fun attitude will be missed.
Not like I'll never see Mike again...he'll be out in San Francisco next weekend for the Treasure Island race...I just like making things sound more drastic than they really are:)
But with Mike leaving, it was a perfect excuse to get off the OTC and have a fun night on the town. We started out with dinner at one of our favorite restaurants (Blue Star) and topped it off with fresh ice cream from the best place in town (Josh and Johns).
The evening didn't turn into one of those late-late nights, for many reasons...the Cancun World Cup is this weekend and half the party-goers are racing on Sunday; Mike is flying out at 9:30am and hasn't even started packing his gear; Jasmine still had to drive up to Denver tonight; the 'happy-hour' dinner prices ended at 6pm so our meals started early!
I brought my camera to capture some fun moments among friends:

Yoni and I relaxing at the table in Blue Star.

Nate and Sarah enjoying some adult beverages.

Tim and Matt...they made a bet on the winners of the World Series: the loser had to wear a skirt out to dinner...can you tell who backed the Rockies and who cheered for the Red Soxs?

Mike and Jasmine enjoying a Blue Star moment.

Tim and I, just killing time between dinner and heading for ice-cream. As the two drivers of the evening, when we said 'lets go', there is NO arguing:)

OH YEAH...Josh and Johns Pumpkin Pie ice cream is THE BEST!!

Quick Recap of Austin

I actually remembered to look at the weather forecast for Austin before I left COS. I wanted to pack minimally and was happy to see that the temperatures were going to be in that 'perfect' range where it's not too hot or too cold.
Well, I must have mis-read some part of weather.com because I was a bit unprepared! I packed light-weight clothes and didn't even carry a jacket...I just sprinted from my car into the airport in COS and thought I would be warm until I got back home...WRONG!
I got to Austin around 8:30pm on Friday night and didn't walk outside into a crisp evening...it was a COLD evening! Good thing I always wear jean pants when I travel...because I wore them for the rest of the weekend with layers of short-sleeved shirts up top.
The next morning came complete with cold winds all day. I was taking care of my bum foot and trying to do as much "sitting work" as possible...well, the "sitting work" was always under a tent and out of the warm sunshine (for the first time I was actually jealous of the guys out doing the heavy lifting in the sun)!
Anyways...the course was all set up and registration went very smooth on Saturday. I worked the race-day registration and got to see my friend Brendan check-in (see photos below) for his first IronKids. I made it through the mid0day session by chowing down on the yummy Clif Bars for kids (called Z-Bars) thanks to the Clif Bar rep that was at the race site. They also have these fruity-things called "Fruit Ropes" that are completely made from organic fruit...at least I was eating healthy during the registration:)!
After packing up the IK staff headed into Austin to shop and grab some dinner. I was in heaven because we went to the HUGE Whole Foods store and got to chow down at the endless salad bar (yes, a $15 salad is well worth it!) before hitting up some clothing stores to warm up the credit cards! I picked up some cute shirts...but of course, I couldn't find a jacket/sweatshirt that I liked enough...it would have come in handy for the race morning!
Speaking of race morning...I was up at 5:40am (which was 4:40am COS time) and heading to the Circle C Ranch pool. The sun wasn't up yet but the kids were already in the transition area getting their gear set up. I took photos all morning as I was running around cheering for the athletes. I got to speak to the kids before they started racing...a little motivation and pump-up stuff...and then again when it was time for the awards. Between those two times at the microphone, I was at the finish line for every competitor passing out words of "Congratulations" and their 'finisher pins'. (Shhh...I pocketed a bag of the pins to pass out to people I meet during my travels around the world:) Sharing pins seem to be a great ice-breaker in any country and with people of any language.
The race day ended around 2pm as the last stack of cones was loaded into the IronKids semi-truck. Some of the staff had early afternoon flights and were already on their way to the Austin airport. Fortunately, I had a late afternoon flight as was able to get back to the hotel for a shower, a meal, some TV, and a relaxed packing session. Tom Ziebart, head IK race director, had a flight time similar to mine and was able to give me a ride to the airport.
By the way, did I mention that I was able to upgrade to FIRST CLASS on the Denver to Austin flight on Friday night? Yeah, that was sweet! We were served a complete dinner and treated like 'airline royalty'. Well, I was able to use another upgrade and get the First Class treatment on the Austin to Denver flight! If I keep getting these opportunities, I'm going to be too spoiled to ride back in the 'cargo-load' with the rest of the passengers:)

Austin IronKids

Why not start with all the fun photos that I took on Sunday morning at the race...sounds good to me:)
The cutest age-group...7-year-old girls...running from the pool to the transition area.

Brendan Driscoll finishing his first IronKids event!

The Senior kids testing their climbing skills on the bike course.

The first heat of 14-year-old boys starting at 9am.

The IronKids Staff...staying warm and starting the clocks.

The air was cool, but the sun was warm...so we kept the waiting heats of IronKids on the sunny side of the pool.

I LOVED this image in the transition area, glad I had my camera this time...Your eyes do not deceive...That is a one-speed, GT kids mountain bike with a $150+ Rudy Project Aero Helmet (they sponsor me and I don't even have one of those!)

Annmarie and I, pausing mid-day, to capture our matching outfits on film (actually, on a memory chip). (No, we did NOT plan any of it:)

My FIVE Star-Day

Today I topped my 4-and-a-quarter-star day by awarding myself FIVE stars!
1. 80 minute swim practice
2. 30 minute strength/weights/abs
3. 2.25 hour bike ride
4. 50 minute aquajog
5. 1 hour yoga/stretching!!!
Yep, five different training sessions today! It's called "putting time the bank" because my weekend is not going to be very conducive to training. Since I'm heading down to Austin, TX tomorrow for the IronKids race this weekend, I thought I would take advantage of a beautiful, warm day here in COS and get in as much training as possible. My arms are actually really tired right now and typing is kind-of a chore.
Anyways, it was a fun day...swimming with the team (although I did the whole workout by myself since I'm in half-way-decent swimming shape right now...meaning that my intervals are a bit faster than the group) and then riding out east in the sunshine with Justine and Sam McGlone (2nd at IronMan earlier this month) and then meeting a new resident mountain-biker at yoga class.
In other news, Colorado is going crazy lately with the Rockies playing in the World Series...I'm sorry, I still can't force myself to care about the GAME of baseball...so everyone and their mother's brother is in front of the TV right now watching Game 2.
Last night, during the slaughter of Game 1, I attended the "Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame 2007 Induction Ceremony" at the World Arena. Basically, it was another one of those 'perks' for being a resident athlete...the USOC purchased two tables at the dinner and had five tickets to give away to some athletes. I volunteered to go (they said it was $100 per seat so I was guaranteed GOOD food:) along with some of my triathlon teammates: Jasmine, Matt, Mike, and Sarah.
We got all dressed up and pretty and had a nice evening at the World Arena listening to a lot of boring speeches...until they did Amy Van Dyken's induction and she was a GREAT public speaker! Very witty and charismatic...I took some mental notes to use so I can improve my own public speaking ability. The food was average...bummer...but I had fun with my friends and it was another excuse to get out of the OTC! Here we are all dressed up at the end of the night:

1 Successful Surprise Party!!

Finally...I can write about the SURPRISE ''Baby-Shower/Congratulations Party" that Jasmine and I organized for our Assistant-USA Triathlon Coach, Sharon Donnelly!
Basically, we had EVERYONE in on the surprise...and we pulled if off this morning after swim practice with a HUGE brunch in the Athlete-Service-Center room at the OTC! She had NO idea and we had everyone do their part for the party planning and supplies!
Thanks to all the guys who were in charge of the serving supplies (plates, napkins, spoons, etc). BIG thanks to the Raven's Nest coffee shop (and Thanks to Timmers who drove and picked up the drinks) for providing us with a big thing of coffee and another big thing of HOT Chocolate (my favorite!). Thanks to the Korteum's for letting Jas and I raid their kitchen last night to cook and prep all our food!
Here is a list of what our 'spread' included...
I baked three quiches (and I'm VERY proud of how successful they turned out...in taste and appearance!):

Jasmine made hummus and bruschetta to go on some Great Harvest Breads:

Sam McGlone (Miss 2nd place at Ironman) made a fruity-fruit salad.

Sarah Haskins made some mouth-watering chocolate cupcakes and blueberry muffins:

I threw together some fruit and yogurt parfaits with Jasmine's HOMEMADE granola:

Sarah Groff made a great sign for the room...we all stood under it when Sharon walked in:

I had such a great time putting this party together and I'm so glad that Sharon was completely surprised! It's fun to do something for someone else...I just like being in the background, doing all the organization (and cooking:)...and then let someone else be the center of attention!
We didn't end up with much left-over food...which was the goal! The stuff that was still around when we started cleaning up went home with people who have kitchens and no access to the never-ending-OTC-Cafeteria!

Dave, Tim, Branden, & Jarrod
(By the way, we were honored to have 2008 Olympian Jarrod Shoemaker in town for 2 days!)

Hunter, Matt, Matt, and Sharon (Bob in the background:)

Why I LOVE October...

Yesterday, I was sweating in a short-sleeved jersey with light-weight arm-warmers and shorts for my two-hour bike ride.
Today, I wake up to HUGE flakes of snow falling from the sky and covering everything in sight.
Nothing can beat the mish-mash of weather in Colorado in October...but it always snows once before Halloween! Unfortunately, this put a slight damper on my plans to ride 3+ hours today with the Sunday Group Ride...so, I will be in the basement for a few hours today, riding nowhere and listening to loud music.
A quick recap of exciting things that have occurred in the past couple days...
My brother swam in his first dual-meet of his Senior year. It was a three session meet: Friday night, Saturday morning, and Saturday afternoon. Dustin ROCKED in all his events (only his 200Free was hurting since it was 5 minutes after an amazing 400IM)!! I didn't get to see any swimming but I got updates from him, the family, and the GatorZone website which stated: "Dustin McLarty (DeLand, Fla.) continued to have a strong season as he came to the wall second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:29.22." That's my lil'brother!
Other news in the swimming world (that I care about): the 10K USA World Championship/Olympic Trials Qualifying races were this weekend in Ft. Myers, FL. The women swam on Saturday and I was thrilled to get emails from my friends in the OW swimming world saying that Micha Burden WON the race! She's a really good friend of mine...we met in Feb. of '06 at the Lifesaving World Champs in Australia...she's only been training for this 10K event since then!! My other good friend, Erica Rose, finished strong but failed to qualify in the 10K (that's okay because she's going to ROCK the 25K in Spain next year)!
The men swim today (probably right now) and I'm sure I'll hear results before the day is over. I'm cheering for my Gator teammate Scott K. and good friend Chip P...hopefully the two of them can pull out a 1-2 finish and head to Spain next year for a chance to go to Beijing!
Back to my world...I'm still in Das-Walking-Boot and staying away from anything that resembles running. I'm not sure how the foot is feeling, since I'm not giving it an opportunity to hurt, but I will test it out on Wednesday after a week of drugs and pure rest.
One of the perks of being a resident-athlete here at the OTC are the opportunities to do/see/visit things for free thanks to free tickets donated to the OTC. I've been to some music concerts at the World Arena, free of charge...and on Wednesday, I'll be heading back to the World Arena for a fancy dinner in honor of the 2007 inductees into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame. The only person I've heard mentioned so far is Amy Van Dyken, former Olympic swimming sprinter, and it'll be cool to clap for her (and whom ever else in honored).
Then, this weekend, I'll be heading down to Austin, TX for the IronKids event. I can't wait to see the kids racing and visit with all my IK staff friends. That will take up my weekend from Friday afternoon until Sunday night. Look for photos after these events...I haven't had my camera out in a while and it shows...nothing but words covering my blog:)

The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

I have had no success in regards to my foot problem that is keeping me from running (it's almost been a month now!). So today I saw the Doctor that comes into the Training Room once a week, after he finishes all his surgeries at the hospital!
Anyways, he thinks it's just a suck-y case of plantar fascia (we already knew that) but he had me get some x-rays of my heel, just to be safe...fortunately, they came back with no problems.
On the other hand, that means there is no simple answer as to why it hasn't gotten better during this time. So he said the next step is to put me in "Das Boot" (which translates to 'the boot' in a bad German accent)...so now I've got the walking boot and it is sitting on the floor next to my right shoe (I put away my left shoe, wont be needing that for a while). I will be wearing Das Boot 24/7, as long as I'm not in the water or on a bike. I have to admit, it does make walking a LOT less painful...actually pain free...so I guess it is a step in the right direction.
The Doc also put me on a strong anti-inflammation drug to help bring down the mess that is going on in my arch. I DO hate taking drugs...I would rather just deal with it and let my body figure things out naturally, but this is getting ridiculous and I have decided that my body is way past deadline and I'm sending in reinforcements.
The aqua-jogging sessions will continue, along with a good strength routine, and I will keep chugging away at rehab! Lets all hope for the best, very quickly!

An Epic MIS-Adventure

Oh, it started out as a GREAT idea...yesterday, Mike asked if I wanted to join him on a 2.5-3 hour bike ride up to Woodland Park...I said 'yep' and so we started asking other people if they wanted to join. By 11am this morning, when we rolled out of the training center, we had also recruited Jasmine, Ethan, and Sarah G. We were all pretty aware that the weather was a bit chilly and there were some heavy clouds building, so we dressed appropriately.
Here is a little backgroud about this route...Woodland Park is a town located north along Highway 24. The elevation in COS is 6000 feet, Woodland Park tops out at 8700 feet. I drive through WP every time I go skiing in Vail and Breck. Most importantly, The Donut Mill is located in WP...I'm talking about Cinnamon Rolls the size of your face, Fritters the size of your palm, and Bear Claws the size of (yep, you guessed it) BEAR CLAWS! And everything is ridiculously cheap, most things cost under a dollar!
Naturally, this is THE place for hungry and poor athletes to stop after hiking, skiing, and (of course) in the middle of a long bike ride! I will confess that the promise of a Donut Mill stop was the deciding factor for me to join this ride...same with everyone else I was cycling with. I have never biked from COS to WP, only driven through it to other destinations.
We rolled out of the OTC at 11am and were having a very enjoyable ride. The sun was shinning, we were all chatting and laughing, and taking turns on the front pulling into the headwind whipping down the canyon. The road (Highway 24) is a 4 lane, divided road that winds through Ute Pass up to WP. At one point we turned off the highway onto a quieter side street that paralleled it for about 7 miles...then we rejoined the highway for the final few miles into town. At about the same time we passed the "Welcome to WP, elevation 8700 feet" sign...it started SNOWING on us! No kidding, flakes were landing on my jacket (by-the-way, the sun had disappeared about 30 minutes prior) and my face was starting to freeze...I won't bring up the condition of my toes, which at this point had been frozen for half the ride.
But we were almost there, the Donut Mill was JUST around the next corner, on the other side of the stop light! We rolled right up to the door, ready to make a quick entrance, purchase, and consumption before hurrying to beat the storm home.
Wait a second...it's kinda dark in the windows...and the 'Open' sign isn't lit up?!? What does that piece of paper taped to the front door say?? "The Donut Mill will be closed on Wednesday, October 17th for RENOVATIONS!!!!!!!!" YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!!
No joking, our 1 hour and 47 minutes of non-stop climbing got us to a CLOSED Donut Mill. If our feet, hands, and half our faces weren't already frozen, we probably would have done some yelling and gesturing. Instead, we turned around, rode 100 meters back down the sidewalk to the nearest coffee shop, hurried inside, and made orders for five hot drinks.
When the drinks were drained (too soon for my liking) we all pulled our extra layers out of our jersey pockets, zipped up, and layered our chests with newspaper. No kidding again...I learned a new trick from Sarah Groff. We took the crappy parts of the newspaper (classifieds, advertisements, etc) and spread them across the front of our chests and belly. It was the coolest (or should I say, warmest) idea I've heard of...my bike ride home was nowhere near as horrible as I expected. Yes, my hands and feet were numb, but since my chest was 100% protected from the wind, it was much easier to tolerate.
What took us 1 hour and 7 minutes to climb, took us under 24 minutes to descend! Nope, still not kidding...we rocketed down the Ute Pass averaging over 40 miles an hour without pause. I lead the way (what hinders me on the climb up, sure does help on the way back down, if you get my point:) down the winding road. We stayed off the shoulder...while it's okay on the 10mph average trip going up...you don't want to hit a rock/hole at 40+mph and go flying. That is, we stayed off the shoulder until we got back into the COS area...that's when the word was passed up to me in the front that Jasmine had a flat!
And it was definitely flat...a nail had gone clear through her tire/tube and come out the other side! Fortunately, my Dad taught me well and I carry an extra TIRE in my seat pack. We pulled out the tire, my frame pump, Jasmine's spare tube, and got her ready to ride again. The five of us were rolling for less than 10 minutes when I hear "I think I've got a flat" from Mike...yep, sure enough, he had an industrial-size staple protruding through his tire. Whip out another tube, employ the frame pump again, his tire was good to go...and then we were rolling, AGAIN.
20 minutes later, we pulled into the OTC. 3.5 hours on the road...2.7 hours of ride time...sometimes that's just what happens, you can't plan it and you can't always avoid it. Usually, it's going to happen when you least expect it and when you really don't want it to...like when you're in a 50+ person group ride, 30 miles from home, and no one else is going to stop and pull you home in the massive headwind:)! Or in our case, when it's freezing cold outside and all you wanted was one blasted donut from the Donut Mill!

Weekend Race Recap

First, I wasn't at a race this weekend. It was very sad to just sit at home and watch the results pour in...but I know that it IS what is best for me in the long run (ie...Cancun in 3 weeks). Basically, I'm approaching 4 weeks of NO running because my foot is bothering me SOOO much. I'm continuing to work with the trainers in Sports Med, and doing all the rehab I can think of. I will see the Doctor on Wednesday and probably know more after that.
Second, the Hawaii Ironman was on Saturday and it was the first time that I actually had a close friend and training partner in the race...Sam McGlone! So I enjoyed the afternoon in my room with the live video coverage streaming on my computer and watched her have a fantastic race and finish in Second Place! That is an amazing feat considering it was her FIRST full-Ironman-distance race!
Third, the Dallas US Open Triathlon was on Sunday. I was entered in this race and I had a plane ticket to the city. Since I knew that I couldn't run for three minutes, let alone a 10K race, I decided to cancel my ticket earlier last week and check the results on-line. I was thrilled to hear that another good friend and training partner, Sarah Haskins, WON the women's race!
Fourth...Since both these ladies are arriving back in COS tomorrow, I gathered some colored paper, markers, balloons, ribbon, tape, and scissors in my room. Then I recruited Jasmine and Sarah Groff to come make 'Congrats' signs to hang on Sam's garage door and Sarah's front door. We just returned from our late-night drive around town to duct-tape and our crazy creations in place! We just have to keep our fingers crossed that they don't blow down before the recipients see our creativity! (I can't believe that I didn't take any photos!!)
Fifth...another week of good, hard training has commenced. Dare I say that yesterday, Sunday, was a complete DAY OFF!! I slept in, ate a big brunch, read some books, solved some Sudoku (which actually ended up being all wrong in the end) went shopping, etc, (typical day-off things). But that is just a fleeting memory as I get back to the hard part of this job with a hard swim, bike, AND run on tomorrow's schedule!

One of Those Days

Today has definitely been 'that day'...one you don't want to repeat ever again. The one you wish never happened in the first place, the one where you feel like 'maybe I should have just stayed in bed this morning!'
It started with another early alarm waking me up out of my warm bed. I am looking forward to Daylights-Savings because it is getting steadily darker-and darker at 6:45am when I twist open my blinds...not good motivation for someone who wants to crawl back to bed, not dive into a freezing pool for 5000 meters of hard swimming.
But that is what I did this morning...dove head-first into the pool and ground out 5K of 'strength' oriented sets. That means lots of pulling and swimming with a band...which is where my day started going downhill. After all that upper-body work, I re-pulled a muscle (or tendon or something) in my upper-side-ribs that caused me to throw off my smooth swimming and just fight through the rest of the workout.
So that is going to be sore for a while, especially since I'm not about to take time off swimming (already doing that with the run). But that still leaves me one sport...cycling...that I've been having nothing but great, hard workouts. Today was going to be nothing different as I headed out for a 2.5 hour ride with 2 descending ascents of the entire Gold Camp climb. I was doing a nice LONG warm up, so that I was ready when I came upon the start of the climb, when I got stuck behind a car and a bus that came to a sudden stop. I had no problem stopping; it was the unclipping out of my pedals that caused a problem. For some reason, the two tugs I gave at my left foot were unsuccessful and I just had an 'Oh Sh*t' moment as I realized that I was going DOWN!
Like a real smart cyclist (not) I stuck out my hand and my knee to stop my fall...which is why I now have an ice pack on my knee and a very sore hand! Sometimes I think I would rather crash and slide for some road-rash (at least you can show off the raspberries) but all I've got are some lumps and stiff spots. It didn't help that I was already unmotivated for this ride (okay, not unmotivated, just very tired) and my stomach was not digesting my energy bar properly.
Somehow, someway, I motivated myself to turn up Gold Camp and made my first ascent. 21 minutes later, when I got to the top (told you it was a LONG climb), I was starting to feel good and happy with my effort. So that positive-ness managed to carry over into my second climb (only 45 seconds slower) and into a nice long cool down back to the training center.
When I got back to my room I had to rush through a shower and run down to the cafeteria to grab some lunch because I only had about 30 minutes before my dermatology doctor’s appointment. Some background on this appointment…ever since April when I got home from Australia, I’ve noticed these two spots on my nose that don’t ever really heal. They throb when I’m lying down to sleep and I finally started to get worried. I called the offices this morning…shockingly, they had an opening TODAY, so I grabbed it.
In the span of about 5 minutes from when the Doctor walked in the exam room until he left, I think my heart-rate was in Zone 5 (for the non-triathlete-geek that means it was beating FAST)! He had me lie down so he could look at my nose in better light and then informed me that both spots were ‘Pre-Cancerous Lesions’.
Ummmmm……I wasn’t planning on hearing the word cancer in relation to me until I was at least 75 years old! He said if I left them alone they would probably develop into full-on skin cancer (especially with my daily exposure to the sun). At least one person in the room was still calm…and he continued to tell me that there was a simple procedure where he could freeze the spots, they would scab, fall off, and I would be good to go. Of course I took the opportunity right then to have the simple treatment…now, most of the work will be in my hands: daily applications of hydrogen peroxide, not picking at the scabs, and putting sunscreen on so this does NOT happen again!
I was a bit shaken when I left the office, and called home immediately. When my parents answered, I told them that I had just left the Dermatology doctor’s offices…and my Dad replied that he had just got home from his dermatology appointment!! It was great to have support from my family…and friends, we are going out-to-dinner tonight…perfect way to get my mind off this blasted day!

Darn Gators Football

Light day for me here in COS. I joined the team at the pool this morning, but was off to the side of swim practice doing an aqua-jogging workout. After jogging, I pumped some iron in the weight room...worked my delts and lats today, tomorrow I'm going to blast the biceps and triceps:)! Hahaha! My weight room routine consists of some step-ups, abs/core, shoulder rehab and lots of staring at the insane weightlifters and wrestlers that use the 'real' weights!
I'm still in a depressed funk after watching my Gators win every minute of the game on Saturday night except for the ONE MINUTE that MATTERED! We were literally leading until the last 60 seconds of the game! Oh well, we are still National Champions until they finish the '07-'08 game sometime early in January!
Dustin sent me some hilarious links to YouTube videos. I was cracking up and thought I would share them...click on these if you have a few minutes and need a laugh in your day...The Human Slingshot (stupidity)...Daft Punk Hands (talent)...Where the H*ll is Matt? (I'm so jealous)...Kiwi Bird (my class projects were nothing like this)...Battle at Kruger (long, but amazing wildlife footage).

Four And A Quarter Stars

Remember that talent show Star Search? Today I award myself 4.25 stars (out of 5) for my training. My plan was to try and ride for 5 hours today...starting at 9am after a nice sleep-in and a good fuel-up breakfast. I managed to be on the roads for 4 1/2 hours (riding time was 15 minutes less because of one bathroom break, one water bottle refill, and some long stoplights) until I was so frozen that I couldn't ride anymore and I came home to regain some feeling in my numb feet!
Yesterday, it was SO windy that I joined a lot of my teammates in the basement to ride on the Computrainers instead of braving the dangerous conditions outside. The winds were a forewarning of the cold-front that came through COS last night. At least, I thought it came through last night...so I assumed that when I headed out at 9am, I would only be cold for an hour before it started warming up.
Oh Boy, I was wrong with that assumption! Instead of getting warmer as the day went on...it kept getting colder! The sun was trying to shine but big storm clouds were rolling in over the mountains. I was actually LOOKING for hills to climb to build some body heat and stay warm! ANYone who knows me knows that I will always choose flat-er or downhill instead of climbing...today was much different. First, I climbed up to Manitou Springs...then I climbed up to the Air Force Academy and rode around the hilly loop...then I climbed Woodmen...then I chose to turn right and climb Flying W...and finally, I threw in a loop at the Garden of the Gods to make sure that I was over 4 hours before I got back to the OTC.
It took a LONG time of soaking my feet in warm water to regain full control, movement, and feeling in my toes. I seriously have the WORST circulation...and it always haunts me on cold rides and when I'm snow-skiing. Fortunately, I made it down to the cafeteria for the last two minutes of brunch service so I ordered a custom omelet to gobble down before going into a two hour food-coma/complete-exhaustion nap.
Usually, when I wake up from long, mid-day naps, I do nothing but move to the couch for some more relaxing with the TV remote control...but today I woke up with a cleaning mission! Actually it was an organization mission...so I tackled some parts of my apartment that needed re-arranging. As I was spreading the contents of my shelves all around the living room floor, my temporary roommate and teammate, Justine, was packing her bike for an early morning departure. She is part of the Military World Championship team that is going to INDIA to compete in the World Champs! Timmy O'Donnell is also part of the team...he and Justine are the Military National Champs...Go USA!
Tomorrow will start my second week back in COS, back at altitude, and back into training. I'm still working on my injured foot and I'm really looking forward to testing it out on some light jogging later this week. Cliff, my coach, has given me some training sessions that combine walking and running on grass and told me to make the final decision each day about how the foot feels.
Speaking of Cliff...he is over in Hawaii for the Hawaii IronMan World Champs this Saturday. SAM McGLONE is racing her first IM and she is SOOO going to ROCK IT! This is the first Hawaii IM that I actually have some personal interest in a competitor (she's a great friend and training partner) so I will probably spend a lot of time in front of the computer on Saturday watching the live coverage on the Ironman website!!

Swim, Bike, Rehab

It's a bummer...can't run right now due to a sore left foot and calf! So I'm back into training but I can't fully train. My swimming and biking sessions are unaffected, but since I can't run, I'm in the pool twice as much doing some aqua-jogging sessions. Don't knock them until you try them...aqua-jogging, even with a floating belt, can be as hard as you want them to be!
So this morning I'm heading off to 7:30am swim practice...it should be about an hour and a half (5000 meters)...and as soon as I finish, I'll put on my belt and shoes and do another hour of running in the water!
After my swim/run session I'll hop right onto my bike and go crank out another long, hilly, hard bike ride. Being out of altitude AND the constant climbing in COS has left me lagging a bit behind the others...so I'm riding on my own a lot right now to try and get back with the group...but since the days are beautiful and the weather is perfect, I don't mind the extra time in the saddle at all! See you on the roads:)

Florida Adventures

So last week I was home in DeLand, hanging with my family...Dad picked me up at the airport on Monday afternoon. We stopped by the lake on the way home where Mom was sailing the Hobie Cat and I went for a ride. I pretty much got home, ate dinner, and went to sleep after a long day of traveling.
On Tuesday morning I was awake early so I built my bike and went for a nice 2 hour ride with Dad before it got too warm. Later in the day, I drove out to the airport for a ride in the jump plane, went grocery shopping, cleaned my room, did some laundry. My mom took me back to the lake and I got an introductory course on sailing small crafts (the single-sail-boat we were using is called "Escape"). After a bit of time in the sun (with no tipping over) we went home and I got a great surprise when Dustin showed. He drove home on Tuesday night and spent most of Wednesday with us (no classes or swim practice for him).
I had a dentist appointment scheduled for Wed. morning. On my way home from Dr. Slaughter's office (no joke, that IS my dentist's name!) I shopped for some bird-supplies (I spoil my bird during the few days I am home each year:) and then planned a family lunch gathering. My Aunt drove up from Cocoa Beach and my Grandmother joined us from the cottage in the front yard. We had steaks from the grill and a salad bar.
Since sailing was the adventure of the moment for the McLarty family, we took Dustin and my Aunt out to the lake for a quick spin in the boats. I got better at piloting the Escape while Dad took Jan and Dustin around in the big Hobie Cat. When all the 'guest' family had departed (Dustin back to school, Jan back home, Grandma to her house) I headed out on my bike to join with the Wednesday-afternoon-airport-group-ride.
Thursday morning rolled around, my final day in Florida, and I made the most of it by trying to keep up with my mom all day. First, we saddled up the horses and went for a nice slow ride in the cool morning. Next, I donned some latex gloves and cotton socks on my hands to help stain some shutters. We relaxed for a quick lunch before loading in the car heading toward the beach. I had my very first successful surfing attempt...I stood up on at least three waves...while my mom was next to me showing off her great skills!
On the way back home from the beach we stopped at the lake again and I SOLO-ED the Escape! I've got the hang of this sailing thing...it's so much fun, as long as I don't get going too fast:)! After a quick shower, I walked over to visit my Grandma for a few minutes. I couldn't chat for too long because our day of adventures wasn't over yet...we still had Emma's yoga class to attend! I don't think I had stretched on my whole trip...it was such a great feeling to relax, breath, and stretch out.
I finished off a great day with a new dinner creation...Ratatouille Pizza. YUM! I was so proud of my creation and so sad that it was my last dinner at home so I couldn't help my Dad with the leftovers on Friday...I thought about packing some, but I don't think pizza travels very well on planes:)!
That's it for the Florida Adventures...I'm back in COS!
